In labor 1 year ago

Because i want this to be a place where ALL my memories are kept, i felt the need to journal the birth of my first daughter.

It was an election day, November 2, 2004. I had voted (not for bush). Made dinner that evening, bathed, and put kienan to bed. Note: my due date was November 4th.

Kyle was working nights at the time. It was a little before 11:00pm and he was ready to walk out the door. I asked him to call his boss and ask if he could come in a little late as my stomach was feeling weird. Did i mention my due date was November 4th? Well, it didn't even cross my mind that perhaps i was in labor.

I laid on the couch wondering why my stomach was feeling icky. Finally, after about an hour it hit me that MAYBE they were contractions. DUH!!!! IT WAS ALMOST MY DUE DATE! We never thought to actually count how far apart they were until this point. i think they were about 7 minutes apart, but still was not completely convinced they were contractions. Why? i have no idea. So i decided to take a shower. i had read that false contractions are not felt in the shower.

I felt nothing in the shower. See, it wasn't labor! Right. As soon as i got out i was bent over on the couch asking kyle to count again. 3 minutes apart!!!!!!

Matty came over (we were living in their guest house as we had just moved back from Arizona) to stay with kienan. We packed up the truck and left in a flash. As we were driving to Kaiser which was only 10 miles away, the pain was increasing at a rapid rate. I kept insisting that kyle stop the truck because i couldn't handle the bouncing in the front seat. He would just look over at me like, "WHAT?!?!?" 300 feet from the front of the emergency room i yelled "STOP THE TRUCK! I CAN'T TAKE IT!" So he did and then realized that perhaps he should not take directions from a irrational wife in labor at 1:00am. So we pulled up in front of the ER.

The nurse that greeted us thought walking would help induce my labor further along. We both tried to explain to her i didn't need any "help" but she denied the wheelchair. Kyle left to park the truck. I tried to be polite with her small talk as we walked alllllllllllllllllllllll the way through the hospital into the elevator down the halls to registration. And through our labor inducing walk i stopped every couple of minutes breathing heavy leaning against a wall. I'm sure she thought i was being pretty dramatic.

When we finally reached the registration desk they asked for my ID.
Hmmmmm... still in my pants pocket from voting earlier that day.
Ok, no problem.. what's your last name?

Donovan.

You don't seem to be registered here.

Huh? Where's my husband? I need him!

K, so i guess between us moving and just being pregnant i neglected to ever register myself at the hospital.
Minor details i say.

I was informed after the 20 minute registration process that the baby and i would have to be monitored for 45 minutes before i could be admitted to the hospital for delivery. Fantastic.

There kyle and i were in the itty bitty triage room with me curled up in a ball hooked up to all the machines moaning. Both midwifes were already preforming deliveries and could not come in to see how dilated i really was.

It was now about 3:00am and finally the nurse with a nonchalant attitude asked me if it was alright is she checked me. I said be my guest.

There she stood at the other end of my body with her arm half in me and she looked up at me like a deer in headlights! 8cm dilated! YEP!

They pulled a midwife away from the middle of a delivery and rushed us into our own delivery room. Kyle called my mom to let her know it was time. I was getting louder by the minute. By desire and by nature of the situation i was experiencing this all NATURAL!

20 minutes later at 3:26am our sweet girl, Mackenzie Cecilia Donovan was born. 7lb. 7oz. 18 inches long.

She was BEAUTIFUL and i felt much better getting her OUT! i told kyle i never wanted to get pregnant AGAIN! Hahahahahaha! Funny how God erases the memory of the pain and fills you up with love. So much love that you intentionally do it AGAIN!

So that is my story.

Here she is getting a welcome home kiss from her brother.

This is her 1st birthday celebration at Chuck E. Cheese.

This is her 2nd Halloween Costume Birthday celebration in our apartment.

This is her 3rd birthday celebration as a princess in our new home.

This is her party this year at Underwood Farms.

Here she is all 4 years eating her traditional "Birthday Muffins!"

Happy Birthday Mackenzie! I love you all the way to the moon and back :)
